Leg Pain Q & A
What are some of the vascular causes of leg pain?
When you have sore, aching legs, you might assume it’s due to muscle strain or fatigue or merely a sign of aging. However, leg pain is also an early warning sign of conditions like peripheral artery disease (PAD) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT).
PAD
PAD is a condition that develops when the arteries in your legs become narrow or clogged, and you have impaired blood flow in your legs and feet. It’s often due to atherosclerosis and increases your risk of heart disease. In addition to causing leg pain, reduced circulation in your legs can damage the surrounding tissues and nerves. The inadequate oxygen supply causes your leg pain and fatigue.
DVT
DVT develops when a blood clot forms in one of your peripheral veins. The condition usually develops in your legs and can cause leg pain as it damages your veins and interferes with circulation.
Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are the ropey, blue or purple veins that appear on your legs. They develop when weakness in the valves of your veins allow blood to flow backward and pool in a section of the vein. Eventually, the vein swells and becomes visible on your leg. The reduced circulation causes leg pain and fatigue.
When should I talk to a doctor about leg pain?
You should make an appointment if you have chronic leg pain, especially if it’s worse when you walk or climb stairs. Also, if you have any other symptoms of a vascular disease like varicose veins, changes in the color or texture of your skin, or temperature changes in your feet or lower legs, you should schedule a consultation.
How is leg pain treated?
Our treatment begins with a comprehensive exam to diagnose the cause of your leg pain. We might use tests like ultrasounds to collect more information about your blood vessels and circulation in your legs.
Then depending on your condition, the team might recommend:
- Compression stockings
- Medication
- Vein ablation therapy
- Angioplasty
